Introduction to Keum-boo: The art of Korean gold gilding
Spend an immersive, creative full day at The Studio learning the ancient Korean art of Keum-boo.
Keum-boo (meaning "attached gold") is a fascinating, time-honoured technique used to bond pure 24-carat gold foil to silver using heat and pressure alone—no solder or chemicals required. The result is a stunning contrast between rich, warm gold and bright or patinated silver.
In this relaxed full-day workshop, you will learn the secret to preparing the metal, applying the delicate gold foil, and transforming your sheet into a finished, wearable pendant or a pair of earrings.
What to Expect
This workshop is suitable for both adventurous beginners and makers looking to expand their silversmithing experience. I will guide you through every step:
-
Depletion gilding (preparing the silver): To bond 24ct gold foil, the sterling silver must first have a layer of pure fine silver brought to its surface. You will learn the rhythmic, magical process of heating and cooling your silver repeatedly until it turns a chalky, frosty white.
-
Designing with gold: Learn how to handle and cut 24ct gold foil into delicate shapes, organic accents, or geometric details.
-
The Keum-boo bond: Using a hot plate and a polished agate burnisher, you will watch the magic happen as heat and gentle pressure fuse the gold permanently into the silver.
-
Forming and finishing: Shape and finish your piece into a bespoke pendant or a pair of earrings. You can also explore oxidising (blackening) the surrounding silver to make your gold designs pop dramatically.
